HIDLEFJORD GÅRD

The Island of Hidle stands out in the Ryfylke archipelago, being famous for Flor & Fjære’s beautifully arranged gardens, greenhouses, and beaches, and has become a place synonymous with relaxation and abundance. A couple hundred meters south of the gardens, facing Stavanger city, we find Hidlefjord Gård, a classic wooden farmhouse overflowing with raw materiality and natural light which nourishes an inviting atmosphere.

As a part of Flor & Fjære’s development, the farmhouse has recently been repurposed for events, dinners and other sorts of gatherings with an option to stay the night. We have contributed to revitalize the house with a kitchen, bathroom servants, doors, and a staircase, allowing us to delve into the making of coherent and suitable furniture and interior, approaching the project as a house, rather than a room.

The result is characterized by its robust materiality and honest surfaces, joining the original exposed wooden construction on an uninterrupted path to weather away in times to come. The naturally oiled oak kitchen is supported by steel plinths and countertops, tying together the elements in an enduring fashion. The use of steel also allows for the modern appliances to appear even less foreign, in addition to the selected articles having timeless qualities all on their own.

The kitchen centerpiece is an island on wheels, making the refurbishment less intrusive by respecting the original outline of the house. In addition to being mobile, as it can be moved into the living room if an event would require, it also becomes more significant and attention-grabbing, depicting a flexible furniture rather than a persistent kitchen island.

As usual we’re grateful for the collaboration with all involved parties, especially the client – a family business who initiated and co-developed the project with passion.
