FRITZNERS GATE
Sometimes we get to do projects that go a little bit further – and this gem located in the boulevards of Frogner in Oslo is the perfect example of just that. In this complete renovation of the first floor in a Jugendstil villa, we adapted to its high ceilings, tall baseboards, and barred windows. Our ambition was to create something new and significant, while still retaining the underlying architecture.
The far kitchen wall is enveloped in walnut from floor to ceiling, with the countertop reaching out in marble and uninterrupted veneered cabinet fronts. The kitchen island draws on the geometry of both the wall and the countertop and establishes itself as the center piece by allowing the marble to live its own life and emerge from the walnut base. It’s organic, yet strictly controlled.
The adjoining dining room features painted oak shelves and cabinets – seamlessly blending with the walls while adding a new texture. These cabinets surround a massive walnut dining table that resembles an inversion of the kitchen island, creating a profound connection between the two rooms. The combination of walnut and marble is dramatic and undeniably heavy, yet it maintains a sense of balance through its appropriate scale, symmetry, and calm materiality.
We’re proud to showcase this project, a team effort between all of us in Tjerand, our client, and the participating disciplines.
